      Can the STWA151WT-01 talk directly to another RS485 device like a PLC or VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) without some sort of MCU in between?

      It depends on whether your VFD is programmable or not, and if it is not, then an MCU is needed to process the data.

      Yes it is programmable.  It is a Hitachi WJ200-015SF and does have the RS485 protocol.  If this is possible how do you address it in the software? Do you have any examples?
